Hassan Nawaz Replaces Aneurin Donald at Desert Vipers for ILT20 Season 5
The Desert Vipers have their replacement. Hassan Nawaz is back in the Vipers squad for ILT20 Season 5, stepping in for Aneurin Donald after the England batter withdrew from the tournament.
The defending champions confirmed the move on 16 October 2026. Donald was signed at the Season 5 auction but will miss the tournament following his selection for the England T20I series in Australia in November and December.
For Hassan Nawaz, this is a homecoming. The Pakistan batter was part of the Vipers side that won ILT20 Season 4 earlier this year, and he returns to the Desert Vipers after a strong year in franchise cricket with Quetta Gladiators in the PSL and Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in the CPL.
The Hassan Nawaz Desert Vipers switch is one of the smartest ILT20 Season 5 replacement moves of the year, because the young batter arrives in serious form. Here is the full story behind the signing, the numbers that forced the Vipers to act, and what it means for the title defence.
Hassan Nawaz Returns to the Desert Vipers
The Desert Vipers announced on 16 October 2026 that Hassan Nawaz will replace Aneurin Donald in their squad for the fifth season of the International League T20. The announcement made the Hassan Nawaz Desert Vipers squad ILT20 Season 5 spot official just weeks before the start of the new season.
The Vipers confirmed the recruitment with a statement from chief executive Phil Oliver, who congratulated Donald on his international selection and welcomed Hassan back to the squad. Oliver said Hassan already knew the team well and had played an important part in the title-winning campaign of Season 4. The Phil Oliver Desert Vipers message was clear: this was a straightforward decision based on familiarity, form and fit.
The replacement strengthens the Pakistan players ILT20 group at the Vipers. Babar Azam leads the group of Pakistan players at the Vipers this season, and the arrival of Hassan gives the champions real depth in the batting order. Why Aneurin Donald Withdrew From ILT20 Season 5
Why did Aneurin Donald leave Desert Vipers? The answer is national duty. Aneurin Donald was one of the eye-catching auction recruits of the Desert Vipers ILT20 squad, but his plans changed when England selected him for the Aneurin Donald England T20I series in Australia. The series runs through November and December, which clashes directly with the ILT20 window.
Donald was picked up at the recent auction, so his withdrawal forced the Vipers back into the market. Oliver said the franchise was disappointed to lose the England wicketkeeper-batter but congratulated him on his international selection, describing it as recognition of his outstanding form.
The England call-up has opened new doors for Donald in Australia as well. He went on to sign for Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League, and the full story is covered in our report on Aneurin Donald joining Perth Scorchers for BBL 16.
Hassan Nawaz and the Season of His Life
How many runs did Hassan Nawaz score in PSL 2026? The answer shows why the Vipers moved fast. The Hassan Nawaz PSL 2026 campaign was a turning point in his career. In the PSL the powerful right-hander scored 291 runs at a strike rate of 134.1 for Quetta Gladiators, with an average of 32.33 that underlined his growing consistency in the shortest format. The Hassan Nawaz PSL 291 runs 2026 record turned him from a squad player into a genuine match-winner.
The Hassan Nawaz CPL Antigua Falcons 220 runs story was even better. He was the joint-highest run-scorer for the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, alongside Evin Lewis, with 220 runs at a strike rate of 127.16. The Falcons went on to win the CPL title, which gave Hassan two championship medals in one calendar year. The Hassan Nawaz CPL runs tally made him one of the most wanted young batters in franchise cricket.
Hassan recently made a brilliant 96 from 51 balls at number four against India in the Asian Games in Japan, a knock that showed what he can do higher up the order. He also gives the Vipers flexibility, because he has batted in five different positions for Pakistan in T20 internationals, from opener down to number six.

What the Signing Means for the Desert Vipers Squad
The Aneurin Donald replacement Desert Vipers 2026 deal was an easy call for the champions, because Hassan already knows the dressing room and the demands of the league. He was part of the title-winning campaign in Season 4, even though he struggled for runs with the bat in that tournament.
Hassan was used mainly in the finisher role in Season 4, but his recent form suggests the Vipers can now use him at number four as well. His fielding is another big asset. He took 12 catches in 13 matches in Season 4, and many of those efforts came in the outfield during the title run. For a side that prides itself on sharp out-cricket, that matters.
There is also a nice twist to this story. Hassan went unsold at the Season 5 auction, which made his return one of the feel-good stories of the season. The Vipers only had to wait for the right moment, and the England selection created it. For the Desert Vipers ILT20 title defence squad, that combination of power hitting, flexible batting positions and elite fielding is exactly what a champion side wants to keep.
